Unevenness Detector
Outer diameter unevenness detector (TM)
(0 Review)
An outer diameter unevenness detector (TM Series) is a precision non-contact optical measuring device. It uses infrared or LED light projections to track surface variations, bumps, or dents on wires, cables, and moving cylindrical objects

Outer diameter unevenness detector TM series
This device projects a constant amount of light onto the object being measured and monitors the unevenness of its outer diameter by observing the change in the amount of light transmitted, which is affected by the object's surface irregularities.
It is possible to detect irregularities in the outer diameter of all manufacturing lines, including vinyl-coated wires, communication cables, power cables, plastics, rubber, glass tubes, pipes, and tubing.
Features of the outer diameter unevenness detector
- Non-contact, high-speed, and continuous detection is possible.
- It can handle all linear speeds, from low to high.
- It is not affected by the color or material of the object being measured.
- It is less affected by vertical vibrations of the object being measured.
- The unevenness detection level can be set using a direct reading method.
- Multi-axis monitoring reduces the chance of missing irregularities.
- It can detect all kinds of irregularities ranging from 10µm to several millimeters or more.
- It is easy to handle and maintain.
Detection principle
When a certain amount of light is projected onto an object being measured, the parts blocked by the object will be in shadow.
The irregularities on the outer diameter are detected by the change in the amount of light passing through the slit in the light-receiving section.
Single-slit system
The outer diameter irregularities are detected by the change in the amount of light passing through the surface between normal conditions and when irregularities occur.
While twists and other irregularities in objects that are not perfectly round may be judged as unevenness, it can also detect gently tapered irregularities, although with some limitations.
Double-slit system
The difference in the amount of light received between the two slits is used to detect irregularities in the outer diameter.
While it may not be able to detect gradual changes in surface irregularities, it can detect irregularities in objects that are not perfectly round.
Types of irregularities that can be detected
We offer a wide range of models to suit the diameter of the object being measured and the detection direction, from thin wires of φ0.02 mm to extra-thick wires of φ130 mm.
It can detect various types of irregularities on the manufacturing lines of all kinds of products, including vinyl-coated wires, communication cables, power cables, plastics, rubber, glass rods, and pipes.
Real Products
Image acquisition device
The image acquisition device captures inline photographs of defects detected by the outer diameter unevenness detector (TM series).
By separating the detection and imaging functions, the system can handle inspections on high-speed production lines and can capture images even at linear speeds of up to 1,500 m/min.
Outer diameter irregularity detection unit with noise cancellation function
The TML-02 (display unit) and TML-1003W (detector) are higher-end models that add noise functionality to the conventional outer diameter unevenness detector.
Furthermore, it is possible to customize the TML-02 with a noise-canceling detection unit other than the TML-1003W.
Features of the Outer Diameter Irregularity Detection Unit with Noise Cancellation Function
- We have simplified various settings and calibrations using a touch panel.
- It can record up to 64 different bump and groove shapes.
- The recorded data can be saved to a USB memory stick.
Noise futon review
Since the uneven surface always passes through both slits, the change in light intensity at each slit will have almost the same waveform.
On the other hand, in the case of dust and debris, they may pass through only one slit, or they may pass through the slit at a speed different from the linear velocity.
Furthermore, in the case of ambient light, the light intensity of both slits changes simultaneously.
Based on these characteristics, the time difference in which the object being measured passes through the two slits is calculated using the linear velocity obtained from the speed input.
By not detecting signals that deviate significantly from this time frame, or waveforms that differ greatly between the two slits, as peaks and valleys, the noise during detection is canceled.
