A laser outer diameter measuring instrument, also known as a laser microgauge, measures the outer diameter by converting the time the laser beam is blocked by the object being measured into a length of time. This is a standard orthogonal two-axis measurement which calculate the average value of the X and Y axis.

Advantages of non-contact measurement
By performing measurements without contact, the following advantages can be expected:
- Because it eliminates the need to hold the workpiece with instruments such as calipers for precise measurement
, it can accurately measure the external dimensions of workpieces made of soft materials such as rubber and tubing. - Compared to measurements using calipers or micrometers, which are susceptible to variations in measurement results and are easily
